Are you planning to take a first-year university mathematics course at UNB in 2011-2012?

The Math Help Program at the University of New Brunswick is offering a math preparation workshop that begins Thursday, September 1, and runs until Saturday, September 3. The workshop will be offered just before orientation begins for first-year students.

The focus of the workshop will be on reviewing and practising the concepts and skills needed for success in first year mathematics courses. You’ll receive individual attention in small group tutorial settings.

Students entering MATH 1003: Introduction to Calculus must pass the Mathematics Placement Test, which is administered during orientation. UNB’s Pre-Calculus Math Workshop will include a practice placement test.

Students who wish to assess their math readiness should work through the problems in the sample diagnostic test Are you ready for calculus? Preparing for University Calculus at Atlantic Canadian Universities, available online at www.math.unb.ca/ready/

Date: September 1, 2 and 3, 2011
Time: Evening Session
September 1 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Day Sessions
September 2 9:00 am - 8:00 pm
September 3 9:00 am - 8:00 pm
(Day sessions include a 1 hour break for both lunch and supper)
Place: Tilley Hall, UNBF Campus

Residence

Students taking the math workshop who will be living in the UNB residence community for the 2011-2012 academic year will be permitted to move in Thursday, September 1, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. Please note there is a $25.00 per night fee for moving into residence early. The $25.00 charge will be added to your regular residence fees and reflected on your UNB financial record.

Meal Plan

The plan consists of breakfast, lunch, and supper on September 2 & 3.

Refund Policy

Students wishing to withdraw must do so in person or by email (mathwksp@unb.ca). A refund of the workshop fee (less a $50.00 administration fee) will be made if requested prior to August 27, 2011. After that date, no refund is possible.

Participant substitutions may be made at any point prior to the start date of the workshop.

Registrations will not be processed until full payment is received. Full payment is required after you submit your application. After applying online, an e-mail notification will be sent confirming receipt of your application and instructions on how to make payment.

*Note: The meal plan rate for option 2 is only available through advance registration.

Semester Services

The following services are offered during the regular Fall and Winter semesters

Drop-in Sessions

If you need a place to work on assignments or get help with a particular problem you can drop by the Drop-in centre located in Tilley Hall Room 422. A tutor will be available to assist you if you have any questions.

Private Appointments

Free Private and Small Group Tutoring available daily for students registered in Math 0863, Math 1003, Math 1013, Math 1503, Math 1833, Math 1823, Math 2213, Math 2513, Math 2003, Stat 2263, Stat 2264 and Stat 2593. Call 453-4768 for an appointment. You may only book one appointment at a time. All tutoring takes place in Tilley Hall Rm 422.If you are having difficulty with a particular topic then you can book FREE 45 minute private tutoring appointments with a tutor by calling 453-4768. The Private tutoring is held in Tilley Hall Room 422.

Midterm & Final Exam Review

Math Study Skills Workshops

We can offer study skills workshops for students taking any math course. The workshop would last about 30 minutes and would help students to figure out their learning style and how to get the most out of their studying time.

UNB Pre-calculus Math Workshop

Many students find first-year university mathematics very challenging. Are you prepared? Check out the UNB Math and Stats Department web site and try the "Are You Ready for Calculus?" sample test. If you are not confident that you have mastered the concepts represented by this review exam, you may be interested in our math preparation workshop. It is a hands-on workshop offered prior to fall orientation. The focus is on reviewing and practicing the concepts and skills needed for success in first-year university mathematics courses. UNB Calculus & Linear Algebra Review (2nd year students)

Are you planning to take a second-year calculus course at UNB? The Math Help Centre at the University of New Brunswick offers calculus review workshop prior to the Fall orientation. The focus of the workshop will be on reviewing the concepts and skills needed for success in second year calculus courses. The morning sessions will include review of Derivatives and Integration Techniques.

The afternoon will focus on Vector Geometry which will be a review for those students who have taken a Linear Algebra course and an introduction for those who have not. If you are not confident that you have mastered the concepts needed for success in a second year calculus course then you may be interested in our math workshop!
