Special Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair

Five outstanding projects in statistical theory,
or that make use of sound statistical techniques.

The Statistical Society of Canada ( SSC ) sponsors a Special Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). It is hoped that the prize will encourage Canada's young scientists to use sound statistical techniques.

The most important assets of a good statistician are skepticism and experience of the world - traits which come with experience. In an effort to help students and teachers to understand the basic ideas behind statistical inference, the Education Committee of the SSC has prepared a set of guidelines for participants at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, and some introductory advice about basic statistical techniques.

Readers will see that, in order to win a statistics prize at the CWSF, it is not necessary to learn fancy formulae beyond the scope of the school curriculum. It is important to be able to display data in ways that best illustrate the major conclusions of an experiment. And it is important to be able to explain conclusions in simple terms.
